Overview of Mathews

Mathews County was formed in 1791 and named after Thomas Mathews, the Speaker of the House of Delegates, who was instrumental in securing the legislation to separate the area from Gloucester County. Mathews has a fond maritime history. As far back as 170 years ago, shipbuilding was a significant source of employment in the county, and there were at least three shipyards in the county. Today the land is mostly woodland and farms.  It is here, in this peaceful surrounding, that you find Kingston Plantation.
